A walk from Bayards Cove Inn to Gallants Bower

Have you walked up to Gallants Bower from Bayards Cove Inn?

From Bayards Cove Inn it’s about a mile away, walking along the harbour, through the Bayards Fort and up the steps along Southtown and Warfleet Road.

The facades of all types of houses line the road, some seemingly dug out of the cliff face, while others stand proud overlooking the River Dart to Kingswear over on the other side.

There are all sorts of interesting place names and nods to a time gone by, as you stroll down towards Warfleet Creek, a small inlet off the river Dart which played a strategic role in the defence of Dartmouth during the English Civil War.

Bear left along Castle Road, taking a few moments to stop and enjoy the view at Warfleet Creek Viewpoint, before your route takes you to Dartmouth Castle along a road flanked by a huge variety of species of trees such as Oak, Hawthorn, Sycamore and Horse Chestnut.

You can stop at the castle, an historic fortress built in the 14th century and explore its ramparts, towers, and gun emplacements. It has the most stunning  panoramic views of the estuary and the surrounding coastline.

We highly recommend visiting St Petrox Church, where the names of locals who lost their lives in WW1 are documented. It remains an active place of worship and welcomes visitors  to admire its architecture and soak up the tranquil atmosphere.

Our route continues past the castle through the woodland until it bears right to Gallants Bower which offers 360º views of Dartmouth.

This  historic fortification  occupies a prominent position overlooking the town and the River Dart estuary and is known for its military history, dating back to the English Civil War in the mid-17th century.

It’s a beautiful place to soak up the views of the estuary and the sea, and in spring to walk among the carpet of bluebells and wild garlic.

Then it’s time to head back to Bayards Cove Inn for something lovely to eat and drink.
